The Soul of the Great Bell

I read the Chinese Ghost Story, "The Soul of the Great Bell."This is not a story about good vs evil, this about love and sacrifice. This is not a theme we see in American Horror Ghost Stories. The bell maker was commanded by the son of heaven to make a special bell out of gold, silver, bronze, and iron. No matter how much he had tried, the bell was not perfect. The son of heaven gave him one more chance to make the bell or he will cut his head off. These parts of the story are like our stories from the west because he has a task to accomplish or die. The daughter is worried and goes to a wizard for advice. This is also similar to our stories. However, the wizard tells her that she needs to sacrifice her life in the fire to save her father. In our country, the problem would be solved with violence not sacrifice. When the father tries the make the bell for the last time, everyone is afraid. Before they pour the bell, the daughter jumped right into the fire. Her nurse tried to save her but only caught her shoe. Her father was heart broken. The workers pout the bell and it turned out perfect. Also, this is a very beautiful story and stories in our country do not often us beautiful description. The only thing left of his daughter is a pretty little shoe and her voice that rings out in sadness when someone rings the bell.

  1. I like your comparisons between the eastern and western tropes as conveyed in this story. I'd be interested to know if these types of stories might also appeal to the other side's culture.
